Black Friday retail finance: Your questions answered
Everything you need to know about offering Snap this peak season, from working alongside your current lender to getting set up.
How can retail finance help increase Black Friday sales?
Many Black Friday shoppers want to buy but can't, or would rather not, pay the full price in one go. Point-of-sale finance gives them a way to spread the cost, so a considered purchase becomes one they can plan for.
Finance isn't a magic switch. Delivery costs, stock, product information and checkout friction all play a part. But where the upfront price is the barrier, a clear and suitable finance option can help keep customers in the buying journey.
Snap focuses on customers that mainstream lenders often overlook. We look beyond traditional credit scores to understand each customer's real circumstances, helping retailers say 'yes' to more customers, responsibly.
What happens if a customer is declined by our existing finance provider?
Without a second-line lender, that's usually where the sale ends. In big-ticket categories such as furniture, beds and electricals, a finance decline rarely leads to a delayed purchase. It typically leads to an abandoned one.
With Snap as your second-line lender, eligible customers declined by your first-line lender are passed to Snap for a further assessment. Snap's decisioning enables approval for up to 35% of applications that first-line lenders decline. Every decision is based on an individual affordability assessment, so approval is never guaranteed.
Since partnering with Snap, Simba Sleep has been able to approve 17% of its first-line declines through Snap.
Can we offer Snap alongside our current finance provider?
Yes. Snap is designed to complement rather than compete with prime lenders, so your current lender relationship stays as it is. Snap can work alongside your existing provider in two ways, and you can use both.
As your second-line lender. Snap sits behind your existing provider in your finance waterfall. Eligible customers declined by your first-line lender get a seamless handoff to Snap, without disrupting the buying experience.
As a choice at checkout. Snap can also sit at checkout next to your primary lender. Customers who feel Snap's options better suit their circumstances, for example because they've been declined by other lenders before, can choose Snap straight away without having to apply elsewhere first. That choice matters, because only 39% of customers are confident they know which lenders will approve them.
Simba Sleep uses both. Simba works with a major primary lender, and Snap sits directly in its Shopify checkout as well as acting as its second-line lender. Simba went live in just three weeks using Snap's Shopify plugin. Since partnering with Snap, Simba has:
• approved 17% of its first-line declines through Snap
• seen a 10x higher acceptance rate than with its previous second-line lender
• seen a 50% higher average order value than its site norm
"Snap helped us signpost their service across the site at the right moments and it has meant customers are not frustrated by being declined by our primary lender." Jon Moore, Marketing & Ecommerce Director, Simba Sleep
Can customers use Snap Finance online and in-store?
Yes. Snap works across online, in-store and telephone sales journeys.
Online, finance can be embedded into your checkout. In-store, customers can scan a QR code or receive an SMS link and apply on their own phone, with minimal staff involvement.
That matters during peak, when stores are busy and your team's time is precious.
For telephony teams there are several options, and we work with you to identify the solution that best suits your business and customer journey.
Do we need to integrate Snap into our website or checkout?
Not necessarily, and where you do, it's simple. Snap is available via API, Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce, QR code, SMS and virtual card. The right integration is the one that works for you and your customers.
Ecommerce plugins. If you're on Shopify, Magento or WooCommerce, Snap's ready-made plugins are quick to launch and embed finance directly into your checkout, so customers never leave the buying journey. Simba Sleep went live with Snap in just three weeks using Snap's Shopify plugin.
Bespoke API. If your ecommerce platform is custom-built, Snap's API embeds finance directly into your checkout, giving customers a fully integrated journey. Timelines depend on your platform, and we'll give you a clear plan from the start.
Developer support on hand. You won't be doing it alone. Our developer support team works with your developers throughout integration, with detailed documentation and help whenever questions come up. Your dedicated Account Manager is also there to support you throughout your journey with us.
No integration at all. The Snap virtual card needs no technical integration. Approved customers pay like they would with any card, and you receive immediate payment at the point of purchase.
How quickly can our business start offering finance?
It depends on your business, your setup and the checks involved in onboarding. As one example, Simba Sleep went live with Snap in just three weeks using Snap's Shopify plugin, alongside its existing primary lender. API integration timelines vary with the complexity of your platform.
If you're thinking about peak trading, talk to us now. We'll give you an honest view of what's realistic for your business, rather than a promise we can't keep.
How does Snap make responsible lending decisions?
Snap assesses affordability beyond credit scores. Our proprietary decisioning combines AI, Open Banking and multi-bureau data, alongside HMRC and Universal Credit income data, for a more precise and current view of each customer's ability to repay.
Our lending models are retrained and redeployed every few weeks rather than annually, so decisions reflect current circumstances. Our checks are designed to support the FCA's requirements on creditworthiness and affordability under Consumer Duty, and customers who find themselves in difficulty can access forbearance support.
